Belonging to Christ’s people
The New Testament describes believers gathering for teaching, fellowship, prayer, and the breaking of bread. Membership gives a definite shape to our place in that shared life. We receive the church’s ministry and accept responsibilities toward other believers. The RP Testimony connects the church’s mission with proclaiming the gospel, gathering people into fellowship, and building them up in faith.
Care and accountability
Christ is the Head of the church. In Presbyterian government, a congregation is cared for by a session of elders, connected to other congregations through presbytery and synod. Elders teach and oversee; deacons serve in mercy and stewardship. Their authority is subject to Scripture. Church membership places us within this pattern of care, correction, encouragement, and mutual service.
Taking the next step
Begin by worshiping with the congregation and getting to know its life. Read the membership chapter in the Directory for Church Government and ask the elders about the vows, preparation, and your own circumstances. A conversation can address a first profession of faith, baptism, or transfer from another congregation. You do not need to settle every question before you visit. Come ready to learn and ask for help understanding what membership involves.
Read the standards
Follow the topic into the church’s confessional texts. The chapter readers include Scripture proofs and an optional Confession–Testimony comparison.
Reflect and discuss
- What patterns of shared life do you see in Acts 2?
- How does belonging to one body affect the way we serve one another?
- What would you like to ask the elders about membership?
