READ THE BIBLE WITH UNDERSTANDING

John: Introduction and Outline

John presents Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, so that through believing we may have life in His name.

Start reading John

Setting and purpose

The Gospel opens with the eternal Word and then follows Jesus’ public ministry, His preparation of the disciples, and His death and resurrection. John identifies his purpose in John 20:30–31: the recorded signs are given so that readers may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and have life in His name. That stated purpose is a useful guide to the whole book.

John invites us to recognize who Jesus is and to receive Him in faith. The signs are more than displays of power: they reveal His glory and accompany teaching about life, light, truth, and salvation. The responses of different people expose both the resistance of unbelief and the grace by which sinners come to Him.

Key themes

The identity of Jesus

The Word who was with God and was God became flesh. John’s account continually joins Jesus’ true humanity with His divine identity.

Life through faith

Eternal life is found in the Son. Believing means coming to Him and depending on Him, not merely being impressed by a miracle.

Love and discipleship

Jesus loves His own and calls them to love one another. Abiding in Him bears fruit in obedience, prayer, and service.

Looking to Christ

Jesus is the center of this Gospel from its first sentence. John the Baptist identifies Him as the Lamb of God, and the narrative moves toward the hour of His death and glorification. His resurrection confirms His victory and sends His disciples into their calling. As you read, ask how each sign or conversation reveals His person and saving work, rather than treating it only as a lesson in moral behavior.

Passages to read

Begin with these passages, then read the surrounding chapters for context.

Questions for reflection

  1. What does this sign or conversation reveal about Jesus?
  2. How do people respond to Him, and what explains their response?
  3. What does trusting Jesus look like in this passage?
