# Assurance of salvation

Believers may know that they belong to Christ. That confidence grows through His promises and the Spirit’s work, even when feelings are unsettled.

## Start with Scripture

Read these passages in context before moving to the explanation.

- John 10:27–30
- Romans 8:14–17
- 1 John 5:11–13
- 1 John 3:14–24[Open the first passage in our Bible reader →](https://ctkrp.org/bible/?q=John%2010%3A27%E2%80%9330)

## Begin with Christ’s promises

Assurance concerns knowing that we share in the salvation Christ gives. Its foundation is not a flawless record or the intensity of a past experience. The Confession points to the truth of God’s promises, evidence of grace in a believer’s life, and the Spirit’s testimony. The Testimony describes the Spirit leading believers to rest on God’s promises, love Christ and others, and call upon God as Father.

## Faith and assurance are not identical

A real believer may struggle with doubt. The Confession recognizes that assurance can be weakened or interrupted, and the Testimony rejects the idea that a person cannot be saved without full assurance. At the same time, confidence alone does not establish that someone belongs to Christ. Church membership, baptism, good works, or a remembered experience do not by themselves provide a sound basis for assurance.

## A steady path of growth

Read God’s promises, pray for the Spirit’s help, and continue in the ordinary life of the church. Examine your life honestly, while remembering that the fruit of faith is not the price of acceptance. Bring your questions to your pastor or elders. Their task is to open Scripture and help you understand it, rather than to give a verdict based on a short description of your feelings. Assurance encourages prayer, love, and faithful obedience.

## Read the standards

Follow the topic into the church’s confessional texts. The chapter readers include Scripture proofs and an optional Confession–Testimony comparison.

## Reflect and discuss

- What does Jesus promise His sheep in John 10?
- Why is assurance different from relying on a particular experience?
- Who in your church could help you study these passages?
