## Setting and purpose

The Gospel opens with the eternal Word and then follows Jesus’ public ministry, His preparation of the disciples, and His death and resurrection. John identifies his purpose in John 20:30–31: the recorded signs are given so that readers may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and have life in His name. That stated purpose is a useful guide to the whole book.

John invites us to recognize who Jesus is and to receive Him in faith. The signs are more than displays of power: they reveal His glory and accompany teaching about life, light, truth, and salvation. The responses of different people expose both the resistance of unbelief and the grace by which sinners come to Him.

## Book outline

-

### The eternal Word made flesh

John 1:1–18 — The opening announces who Jesus is and the grace and truth He brings.

-

### Signs and public teaching

John 1:19–12:50 — Jesus reveals His identity through signs, conversations, and teaching while opposition grows.

-

### Jesus prepares His disciples

John 13–17 — He serves them, commands love, promises the Spirit, and prays for His people.

-

### The cross and resurrection

John 18–20 — Jesus is arrested and crucified, rises from the dead, and appears to His disciples.

-

### The risen Lord and His disciples

John 21 — Jesus provides for His disciples and restores Peter to the work of shepherding.

## Key themes

### The identity of Jesus

The Word who was with God and was God became flesh. John’s account continually joins Jesus’ true humanity with His divine identity.

### Life through faith

Eternal life is found in the Son. Believing means coming to Him and depending on Him, not merely being impressed by a miracle.

### Love and discipleship

Jesus loves His own and calls them to love one another. Abiding in Him bears fruit in obedience, prayer, and service.

## Looking to Christ

Jesus is the center of this Gospel from its first sentence. John the Baptist identifies Him as the Lamb of God, and the narrative moves toward the hour of His death and glorification. His resurrection confirms His victory and sends His disciples into their calling. As you read, ask how each sign or conversation reveals His person and saving work, rather than treating it only as a lesson in moral behavior.
