## Setting and purpose

The letter identifies its writer as Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, addressing believers who share the faith he has received. Peter speaks of his approaching death and wants his readers to remember the truth after his departure. The letter confronts destructive teaching and answers those who scoff at the promise of Christ’s coming.

Second Peter urges Christians to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Growth is rooted in God’s provision and promises, and it calls for diligent obedience. The letter joins confidence in the apostolic witness and prophetic Word with warnings about deception, sinful desire, and forgetfulness of coming judgment.

## Book outline

-

### God’s provision and the believer’s growth

2 Peter 1:1–11 — God supplies what His people need, and they are called to make every effort to grow in godliness.

-

### Remember the trustworthy Word

2 Peter 1:12–21 — Peter recalls the eyewitness testimony to Christ’s glory and the Spirit-given prophetic message.

-

### Recognize destructive teaching

2 Peter 2 — False teachers are exposed through their errors, conduct, and the judgment awaiting them.

-

### Remember the promise of His coming

2 Peter 3:1–13 — The Lord’s apparent delay reflects His patience; His day will come, and His people await a renewed creation.

-

### Be diligent and grow in grace

2 Peter 3:14–18 — The letter ends with a call to steadfastness, holy living, and growth in knowing Christ.

## Key themes

### Grace and diligent growth

God’s gifts do not make obedience unnecessary. They provide the foundation for active growth in faith, love, and self-control.

### The authority of Scripture

The prophetic Word did not originate in human initiative. Peter directs readers to the Holy Spirit’s work and the reliability of God’s message.

### Hope that shapes conduct

The promise of Christ’s return is a reason for holiness and patient faithfulness. God’s coming renewal makes our present obedience meaningful.

## Looking to Christ

The letter presents Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Peter recalls His majesty at the transfiguration and directs believers toward His everlasting kingdom. Knowing Christ is not simply collecting information: His grace reshapes our lives. The closing command to grow in His grace and knowledge gathers the letter’s teaching into a continuing calling for the whole church.
