# Chapter 30: Of Church Censures | Westminster Confession of Faith

1. The Lord Jesus, as King and Head of His Church, hath therein appointed a government, in the hand of Church officers, distinct from the civil magistrate.

Scripture proofs: Isa. 9:6-7; 1 Tim. 5:17; 1 Thess. 5:12; Acts 20:17, 28; Heb. 13:7, 17, 24; 1 Cor. 12:28; Matt. 28:18-20.

2. To these officers, the keys of the kingdom of heaven are committed: by virtue whereof, they have power respectively to retain, and remit sins; to shut that kingdom against the impenitent, both by the Word and censures; and to open it unto penitent sinners, by the ministry of the Gospel, and by absolution from censures, as occasion shall require.

Scripture proofs: Matt. 16:19; Matt. 18:17-18; John 20: 21-23; 2 Cor. 2:6-8.

3. Church censures are necessary, for the reclaiming and gaining of offending brethren, for deterring of others from the like offences, for purging out of that leaven which might infect the whole lump, for vindicating the honour of Christ, and the holy profession of the Gospel, and for preventing the wrath of God, which might justly fall upon the Church, if they should suffer His covenant and the seals thereof to be profaned by notorious and obstinate offenders.

Scripture proofs: 1 Cor. 5; 1 Tim. 5:20; Matt. 7:6; 1 Tim. 1:20; 1 Cor. 11:27-34 with Jude 1:23.

4. For the better attaining of these ends, the officers of the Church are to proceed by admonition; suspension from the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper for a season; and by excommunication from the Church; according to the nature of the crime, and demerit of the person.

Scripture proofs: 1 Thess. 5:12; 2 Thess. 3:6, 14-15; 1 Cor. 5:4-5, 13; Matt. 18:17; Titus 3:10.

### WCF 30.1 · Christ gives the church its own government

Jesus, the church’s King and head, appointed church officers to govern it. Their authority is distinct from the authority of civil rulers. Government officials do not become elders simply because they hold public office.

Explore the ScripturesIsaiah 9:6-7; 1 Timothy 5:17; 1 Thessalonians 5:12.

Talk about itHow are church leaders’ responsibilities different from civil rulers’ responsibilities?

### WCF 30.2 · The keys of the kingdom

Christ gives church officers authority to proclaim his gospel and exercise discipline. Through the Word and discipline they warn the unrepentant; through the gospel and restoration they welcome repentant sinners. They act under Christ’s authority, not as owners of salvation. God alone can forgive sin in its deepest sense; officers declare and apply his Word.

### WCF 30.3 · Why church discipline matters

Discipline seeks to restore those doing wrong, warn others, protect the church from spreading sin, and honor Christ and his gospel. It also guards against God’s judgment on a church that knowingly tolerates serious, stubborn wrongdoing. Its aim includes care for the offender and the whole body.

### WCF 30.4 · Different steps of correction

Church officers may give a formal warning, temporarily suspend someone from the Lord’s Supper, or remove them from church membership. They should choose a fitting response according to the seriousness of the offense and the person’s guilt. Not every case receives the same action.
